Super Senior Year So Far

Hey Everyone!
I thought that for a post today I would share some pictures from this Fall so far.

This is my last year in college, my fifth year.
Like we call it: The Victory Lap, Super Senior Year!

So far, it has been great!
I have really been enjoying it
and
I'm excited to see where God leads me after next semester and graduation.

Enjoy these pictures from the year so far!
:-)

Fall Retreat 2011 -- Camp Hargis

Lake Nicol. One of my favorite places in Tuscaloosa.

Cooking with friends!

Lion King 3D! All, but four, in the theater were college kids that night. It was amazing!
We sang, we danced, we cried.
We relived our childhood.

Summer Snow! Complete with Paper Shea.
(My best friend who is going to school and living in Denver now.)

And of course, Alabama Football!
Roll Tide!

If you have already graduated college, what is your favorite memory from that time?
Or, if you are still in school, what has been your greatest memory so far?

The Past 8 Months -- Part 2

About 8 months after the first hard, scary, traumatic experience.
I had another experience that was the same, but different.

It was different because it wasn't a car accident, but a natural disaster.

Hard, scary, traumatic.

April 27th was a beautiful day.
Besides the fact that I had to spend the gorgeous, blue-skied day sitting in class after class, it was a good day.
We all knew the potential for bad weather later on in the day, but if it was going to be like the past few days, that was going to blow over with nothing really to talk about.

Sitting in one of my classes, I told one of my friends that she could come to my dorm if she wanted to and we could ride out the tornado together with my roommates.
I told her to come whenever, but that I still had one more class that afternoon unless it got cancelled.
Like usual, it didn't, so I was preparing to go to class.

Ten minutes before my class, I was sitting in my dorm living room with one of my roommates and my friend that came over.
We were watching James Spann on the news as he was covering a storm that was heading toward Cullman, Al.
The town that one of my roommates is from.
I decided to be a few minutes late to class, because I wanted to stay with her, make sure she was okay and to watch the storm to see what happened.
The three of us were watching the TV, not really expecting anything, until we saw it.
A funnel cloud form and eventually touch down in Cullman County.
We watched as it quickly formed and then as it started making its way through the town.
I remember seeing a radio tower fall as the tornado passed over it.

My roommate called her parents to make sure that they were okay.
When I heard that they were, I decided to go ahead and go to class.
I was going to be ten minutes late, but it was the last week before finals, so I figured that I needed to go.

I didn't take a rain jacket because it had not started raining yet and was still pretty blue outside.
I walked to class through the wind and got into my class and saw that they were watching a movie.
I immediately regretted my choice of coming to class.
I sat down and literally about 10 minutes later, a girl speaks up and says that a tornado warning has been issued for the southern part of our county.

After deciding that we should go downstairs, our teacher makes us all file down into a small first floor area.
The warning did not include our University yet, so we then found out it was okay to go back upstairs.
Well, being the college students that we are, we all were debating what to do.
Stay and review for the final or just forget about it and go home.

I decided to bail and go back to my dorm.
Going to that class for literally 5-10 minutes was so not worth it.
So, I along with the majority of my class, start walking to our different directions.
As I'm walking back to my dorm, I noticed that the wind had picked up and there were some sprinkles.

As soon as I got to the steps and porch of my dorm, the tornado siren goes off.

The rules are that if you hear the siren, you have to come downstairs.
As I was walking in the building, I texted my friends upstairs and told them to come down.
The siren then went off and the RA downstairs said for us to not worry about it, but that if we heard another one we should make our way to the first floor.

I get upstairs, put my book bag down, go to the bathroom and come back into the living room
as another siren comes on.
By this time, I'm just like really!
Make up your freakin' mind!
I did not want to go downstairs and sit in a hallway with tons of other girls for 3 hours.
We had to do that a week before and it was not a pleasant experience.
Apparently, when you are in a hallway with everyone else, this is when you are supposed to start being annoying and inconsiderate.
Right, perfect timing guys...or should I say girls.

Anyways, we make our way to the first floor and find our spot in the corner that we had grown very fond of.
We make friends with some other girls that we had never met and start talking.

Well, then the phones start ringing, texts come in and talking increases throughout the hallway.
We get messages from people asking if we are okay and others telling us there is a bad storm on the way.

We get online to see what is going on and find James Spann once again.
He is our great weather man! I am really glad that we have him doing weather for the area. He has helped and informed so many people! Props and kudos to him!

We are watching the live feed with about 9,000 other people watching online as well.
They finally flash to a picture of the tornado heading into Tuscaloosa.
I see my two friends who are watching it gasp and put their hands over their mouths.
I was thinking, "I've got to see this."
So, I leaned over the hallway and peered over her computer screen to see the monster that is coming toward us.

This is what we see.

And the last thing that we hear?
That it is heading straight for the University of Alabama.

We all look at each other and pretty much just say that this is going to be a bumpy ride.
But as we turn to face the wall and get into tornado position, that one that we learned back in kindergarten,
we were all praying that God would keep us safe.

The lights flickered and then everything went black.
There was just the light of cell phones and the chattering of scared students.

We heard loud rushes of wind that we know now was the tornado.
It came a little over a mile away from my dorm.

When we were able to get outside, we saw that there was one tree down and thought that maybe the rest of our town had been spared as well.
The power was out and phone lines down. We couldn't get in touch with anyone or find out any information.

We heard initial reports that the hospital was gone and that other parts of 15th Street were gone.
The hospital turned out to be fine except for some busted windows.
15th Street however, was very hard hit.

We debated about whether to go to a friends house that was over the River.
They had no damage and still had power.
Or if we should stay at the dorm. We stayed at the dorm that night, downstairs in the common living room.
We ate Peanut Butter and talked and listened to different stories that we heard, not really knowing all the truth yet.

The next morning, we got up and packed some bags and went to my friend's house.
We sat down in her living room and my other friend that was there asked if we had seen or heard anything.

It had been 12 hours since the tornado.
For 12 hours we had been without power, little phone service, and no news.

When we first saw the videos and the pictures, we thought it was unreal.
There was no way that our town had just gotten taken out by a tornado.

But, it had.

For the next several hours, as much as we didn't want to continue watching the videos, news, or look at the pictures, we continued to.
We couldn't take our eyes off of it.
It was all so surreal.

Time seemed to slow.
That first week after the tornado felt like a month.
Classes had been suspended for the rest of the semester. We had the option to take our finals or take the grade we had in the class.

Graduation for those in May wasn't held.

For 6 students at the University of Alabama, tomorrow never came.

41 people in Tuscaloosa lost their lives and more than 200 in the state were killed.
Thousands lost homes.
Many were missing.
Shelters were set up, search and rescue teams were sent out.
The state was declared to be in a state of disaster and emergency.

Although I didn't personally lose anything that day in the tornado.
It was still my town.
For the past 4 years I have called that place home and now it was destroyed.

For a couple of days I couldn't do anything, but watch the news and videos.
And when that got tiring, a funny, Disney movie.

It was hard, scary, and traumatizing.

I finally got up, praised God that I was okay and that everyone I knew was okay.
Talked to my parents and many others who called to check on me.
And went out to lend a helping hand to those that had lost everything.

I went to Alberta City. I picked up shingles, dug through rubble, carried off limbs.
I helped separate what was to keep or throw away. I went to Hargrove.
I saw 15th Street.
I served food at the Belk Center. I cooked food.
I went out with the American Red Cross to serve hot food to people in areas that hadn't been reached yet.

I did the only thing I knew to do.
I served the people around me. I responded when called.
All of a sudden, the area of need wasn't a plane ride away.
I could walk to it.

My mission field was a disaster.
It was where God called me.
Even though it was hard, scary, and traumatizing.

Hey everyone!
I just wanted to send out a quick message about things around here in Tuscaloosa. I didn't get to check to see if there were a lot of posts like this. But, the city of Tuscaloosa and many, many other cities in the state of Alabama and beyond have been devastated! We need your prayers more than anything!
I was in my dorm on the first floor when the tornado went through. It bypassed the University completely! Definitely amazing! It was supposed to come right for us. We lost power and internet and had no connection with anyone except what we could post on Twitter and Facebook. Me and some of my friends spent the night in the dorm. We still don't have power there, and they are saying maybe Monday, but I feel it might be later. The damage to the town and around the counties is incredibly devastating! My friends and I came to a friend's apartment where we are staying now. We didn't know the extent of the damage or know how big the tornado was until this morning. It has all been very surreal and this has been one of the longest days of my life. And I only lost power. There have been many reports going around and it is sad and hearbreaking to see the city now. We all just can't believe that it happened here.
Please pray for all of those who have lost loved ones and those that are still missing. Tomorrow will be a new day, but it is going to carry a lot with it.
I'm giving out my info for any reason.

Thank you for all the thoughts and prayers. I am praying for any of you that have also been affected by this storm and may have lost someone or anything. I am at a loss of words.

My Humble Abode

Hey Everyone!
So, recently one of my blog friends did a video of her room at school.
I decided to follow that direction and show you around the place that
I have called home for 4 years now.
(Hoping for a 5th...but that is another post for another time.)

Here is a picture tour of my humble abode.
(Sorry it isn't a video for those that would love to hear my accent! ;-) haha)

The living room.

Kitchen nook area and the bathroom.

Sink area. That cool sign is from Starbucks!
;-)

Our bathroom.

My room.
I did have a roommate, but I am now in the room by myself.

One of the desk areas.

The other desk area where I mainly work.

Vanity area.

A view of the beds.
I sleep on the one that is the highest
and
the other I treat as a couch for reading and such.

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

College Fail of the Day

Hey Everyone!
Okay, so first, I should really start writing down the ideas that I have for blog posts and the things that I want to tell ya'll in general.
Because, for the life of me, I have forgotten half of the posts that I was going to write!

Well, this one is tell you of a college fail that happened to me today.
Today, I had a test in my Marriage and Family class.
I prepared by looking over my notes from the class
and extending out info about everything on the study guide.
I was up late last night studying, as all college students do during their cram sessions.

I went to my class today to take the test and as I was going about it, realized that nothing,
NOTHING,
looked familiar.

Now, I am a bad test taker anyways.
I don't know what it is, but I am just not a good test taker.
Anyone else?

Well, I was like great, nothing that I remember studying is going through my head.
I didn't remember anything and nothing on the test looked familiar.

So, needless to say I left the test feeling really discouraged.

Fast forward to my last class of the day.
I'm flipping through my binder to put away a handout that I had gotten
and
there in the back pocket of my binder is a study guide.

A study guide from my Marriage and Family class for my test.

The test that I had today.

It was NOT the study guide that I had studied all night last night.

It was NOT the study guide that I had filled out last night.

It was NOT the study guide for today's test.

Yes.
I had studied the completely wrong study guide.
In fact, I had studied the handout for the last test.

You think that I would have come to the realization that what I was studying seemed familiar,
but no.

I studied the completely wrong thing.

College Fail of the Day.

Here is to hoping that for my test that I have tomorrow,
I study the correct material.

Ramblings...

I have one. More. Final.

It is tomorrow at 3:30.

It is History.

And I have lost ALL motivation to study.

All. Of. It.

Christmas Break is so close I can almost touch it.

But better news!

I finished my Christmas shopping for my parents today. Well, almost.
I have one more thing to get them. :-)
It was a lot of fun and got me more in the Christmas spirit.
I hope they enjoy what I got them.

Also, one of my bestest friends will be in town tomorrow and she is going to spend the night with me!!
I can't wait!
:-)

It's finals week here at UA.
Which means that I have been doing nothing but studying and taking exams.
I've take a Swahili final, a Human Development final, and just tonight my International Relations final.
I still have my Macroeconomics and History Finals to complete.
Then I am done for Christmas Break!

And on top of that, I'm thinking about changing my major.
:-)

Oh college!

My Wish Right Now

I have no desire right now to do school. None at all.
I don't want to go to class.
I don't want to read.
I don't want to study.
I don't want to take tests.
I don't want to write papers or take notes.
None of it.

My desire right now is to hop on a plane and fly.
Fly to some place that I've never been before.
And stay there for awhile.

I want to get away from school for awhile.
But, I can't right now.
I have to stay here for now and be a good student.
Because right now, this is where God wants me.
And I have to go through classes everyday knowing that it is all for His glory.
This is where He wants me right now and
I have to rest in that.

Fall Break Is Finally Here!

Yessssssss.
I finally made it to Fall Break!
I get to spend four days at home.

(There will be a little homework, but I'm home!)

I can't wait to carve pumpkins,
play with puppies,
take pictures,
enjoy the Trick or Treaters,
and
celebrate my Mom's birthday!

It's going to be a great weekend!

On another note. My sister and brother-in-law were not able to make it this weekend.
My brother-in-law, Matt had to have surgery early this morning. It was an outpatient, but
the recovery is going to be a couple of weeks.
Please keep them in your prayers and for the fast healing of Matt and that the pain he is in will go away.
Also, pray for Jennifer as she takes care of him.

We were all disappointed that they weren't able to join us this weekend, but
we want Matt to be all better
and
we know that there will be other weekends when they will be able to come down.
Those plans are already being made.
:-)

Hope you have a great Friday!
Enjoy your weekends!

:-)

So Close I Can Almost Feel It!!!

Jambo!

So, I'm sitting here sipping on a Caramel Latte, in the library "studying". Although I haven't even started copying/looking through notes for my test tomorrow! :-/

But, I am so excited for this weekend it is not even funny. Our Fall Break is this weekend. (Not much of a break, only one day off. Don't get us UA students started about that! But, it is better than nothing!) Meaning, we don't have to go to class on Friday. So, I get to go home Thursday afternoon after my class is out! I am so excited to spend four days at home!

What makes this trip even better is this:
First, it is my mom's birthday and on Halloween! :-)
She is turning...well, she may not want me to post that, but she is another year older and believe me you wouldn't know even if I told you. I love you, Mom! :-)

Second, my sister and brother-in-law are coming into town! This is the first time that they have gotten to come visit us and we are very excited. I'm glad that the time has finally come and that it fell on this weekend!
We are going to have a lot of fun.
I am so excited!

Now, I only have to get through my Macroeconomics test and another oral presentation in Swahili and then I am free!!

What are your exciting plans for this weekend??
Have fun wherever you may be and doing whatever you may be doing.
:-)

Kwaheri!
(A post may be coming soon that will be in all Swahili! I'm loving that class! :-) )

I have a feeling.

A Look to the Past

It has been 3 years since I graduated high school.

Hiking Adventures, Exploring Downtown, and The Blue Angels

Another semester of college has come to an end for me. It is weird to think that I am entering my fourth year of college. Technically by hours, I am not a Senior yet, but still. The fact that I will be here for my fourth year in the fall is very surreal and mind-blowing.

Classes ended last week, yet I am still in Tuscaloosa hanging out with my friends that are still here. I am excited for the summer, but that will be another post. For the past week, we've been hanging out, going out to eat, watching movies, going to the lake to swim, making midnight runs to McDonald's and Krispy Kreme, cooking out by the river, and going on adventures that we don't know where they will lead us.

Earlier this week, we went to one of the lakes around Tuscaloosa, Lake Nicol. Where we went hiking down the edge of it. It was definitely an adventure and very fun, and that area is definitely one of my new favorite places, can you see why?

Another outing that we had was a trip to Lake Tuscaloosa, where we did a little swimming.
We also ate at a great place in Northport, Alabama called City Cafe. Which is so close to Tuscaloosa that we are always there as well. They have a great small downtown area that holds City Cafe and many different antique and other shops.
It's amazing how much we overlook all the really cool places in Tuscaloosa. But, being students, we usually stay on campus and don't have time to see everything.

Last Saturday, we also got to go to the Air Show that was in Tuscaloosa and see the Blue Angels. It was my first time to see them!
